The key is to take an active listening approach to your job. Being attentive to what the customer is saying and really listening is a great way to serve your customers and help them get what they need.
As for passive listening, it's important to be clear about how much time you have to talk. It's also important to ask good questions that help the customer get his/her point across. By asking open-ended questions, you'll gain more information about the customer and you'll be able to better understand the goal of the call.
Be confident in asking yourself questions, make note of your answers, reflect upon them and then implement what you've learnt. For example: If you are practicing active listening while talking to your friends or family members, ask yourself:
What am I doing?
What are they saying?
What are they really saying?
What do they want me to know?
What do they want me to do?
What do I want to know?
Do they feel comfortable with me?
Do I really understand what they are saying?
What do they want from me?
Do I want to listen to them?
What do I want to say?
Do I want to interrupt them?
Peer Group Questions – Think about the size of the private equity firm and the industry you are applying to. How did the firm decide to go with that size? Can you think of a situation where a firm would consider a different size? What kind of questions would you ask to determine whether a particular size or industry is right for you?
To decide which one should you opt for, one needs to look at the business as a whole. Doing so will give a better understanding of how the business functions, how profitable it is, how the management team is doing and what problems it might face in the future. It also helps to determine if there are any other reasons as to why you should or shouldn’t be interested in the company.
