Nelson and guitarist Dave Bristow have been together in The Three Johns since their student days at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and they recorded some demos together in the mid '80s. They are founding members of Discipline, who have also released a number of demos and contributed to other groups. The three Johns have been a constant presence on the London drum & bass scene for a number of years. The title track is a slower, more atmospheric piece, constructed around real strings and a looped guitar phrase from the start of the piece. It has a hypnotic quality. The second track, "Shrine Of Black Cat," is typical of the group. It derives from a number of riffs, one of which is a female vocal sample and a punk style riff. Dave's guitars are very atmospheric as he uses a few distorted guitars, including a tremelo guitar, and the song ends with some unusual sounding fretless jazz guitar and a couple of melodica sounds. The last song is called "Lumo". When I first heard it, I thought it was a re-mix of "Luminescing Fins", another piece that the group have released. Instead, it is a kind of electro-jazz fusion start to finish. There are stops in the middle part.
The music on Atom Shop starts off with "The Sound Of Faith," which if you will believe me is one of the best drum & bass songs of all time. I've been an avid follower of the group for a long time, and this is the kind of stuff that I want from a group. If the word is that good, then I mean it. In fact, I was surprised how far the group had come in two years. I remixed the entire track myself, which included adding in some extra samples to even out the track before putting it on the Internet. Flames and dyes " were run through it for the ending, which was a result of filming one of the tracks at a rave experiment. If you haven't heard The Three Johns, do yourself a favour and buy their debut studio album on A&M (1995). This is a completely different side of the group from their debut, and it has a very different them. "Heart Of A Child," the track I used as an intro to this track, is from the album. d2c66b5586
