The Nokia N8 is a touchscreen-based smartphone developed by Nokia. Announced on 27 April 2010, the Nokia N8 was the first device to run on the Symbian^3 mobile operating system and it was the company's flagship device for the year.[4] It was released on 30 September 2010 at the Nokia Online Store before being released in markets around the world on 1 October 2010.[5] There were two version made, the N8 and the N8-00. The N8 was made for Vodafone and locked to its networks,[6] and the N8-00 was made by Microsoft and open network.[7]

Powering the Nokia N8 is the all-new Symbian^3 platform that Nokia says supports gestures such as pinch-to-zoom and multi-touch. Three customizable homescreens can be loaded with apps and widgets and navigated through with the swish of a finger. There are improved 2D and 3D graphics for a faster and more responsive UI, greater memory management and a visual task manager.

Again, I'd emphasise that I'm not a Facebook guru. And I'd also point out that mobile use of Facebook is likely very different to desktop use - after all, there are none of those time-wasting little games and usually none of the 'advanced' features like photo tagging or page management. Mobile Facebook is, by definition, somewhat stripped down, but that doesn't mean you can't do quite a bit, share your life and generally stay in touch with your friends.

Of course, the hardware is only part of the story and the N8 is the very first handset to be announced that runs the new Symbian^3 operating system. Symbian^3 adds kinetic scrolling, multi touch support, pinch-to-zoom, 3D and 2D graphics acceleration and multiple homescreens, all combined with a very high degree of customization. A very vital aspect of any smart phones is the design and look and feel. While not having the super slick look of an IPhone 4 or Android phones with similar design, the N8 has its own touch of class in a very different way. You really get a feel for the phone is when you hold it, as the size and weight really make it feel very comfortable. Pictures do very little justice for this phone. In many ways its like a car, you have to test drive it to really appreciate it.

One of my favorite apps for password management was Splash ID which i started using with my Palm PDA devices, and then with my Symbian phones. But the Symbian version was dropped, and is not supported on any of the Symbian touch type operating systems versions. Same issue with the very popular note taking software EverNote. I hope with the resurgence we see on Symbian that vendors bring Symbian back and not write it off prematurely.

I just updated mine with the Symbian Anna update, and am waiting for the Bella update. Even though the changes in the Anna update are suttle, the changes are important. Browser experience is better, the keyboard implementation definitely much improved for touch use (and the split keyboard, so important). Qt support has also meant better looking and more user friendly apps for Symbian.

Until then, the default C7 browser is a passable affair, supporting multitouch gestures and Flash playback, but proving sluggish at times when trying to handle the latter. It works, but it lacks the slick swiftness of, say, the iPhone 4. Of course, there are third-party options available through Nokia's Ovi Store that provide an alternative, and it's worth digging out Opera Mobile 10 and Opera Mini; you lose Flash support, but gain a portrait QWERTY keyboard and windowed browsing.
