The Best of Both Mario WorldsWhen Mario's old nemesis Bowser abducts the seven Sprixie princesses, Mario, Luigi, Toad, and the refreshingly not kidnapped Princess Peach hop from the Mushroom Kingdom to the Sprixie Kingdom using the mysterious, new clear pipes. As its slightly misleading title suggests, Super Mario 3D World's($49.98 at Walmart)(Opens in a new window) closest relative is 2011's Super Mario 3D Land($19.99 at GameStop)(Opens in a new window). But whereas the 3D in Super Mario 3D Land's name referred to the stereoscopic 3D visuals provided by the Nintendo 3DS, Super Mario 3D World's visuals are flat but gorgeous HD landscapes powered by the Wii U.
But, I'm genuinely happy to see Nintendo returning to their roots and bringing back Mario as a platformer. The Super Mario Bros series has always been about platforming, and there's no better platforming than Mario on a 2D screen. And, Nintendo not porting the 3D Mario platformer to the 3DS and Wii U is an awesome move for me. I'm excited to see what they do with the Wii U in this regard.
If you haven't already, you should play Super Mario Bros. 2. It's a masterpiece, and Nintendo's best effort. If you have, check out the NES games. They're great. And, you should also check out the original Super Mario Bros. for Gameboy if you haven't already, because it's a classic.
Just recently, Nintendo revealed a new set of Nintendo Direct videos which pretty much confirm that the Wii U is getting a next-gen Super Mario 3D Land. This is interesting and could be the proof that Nintendo was going to reveal in the same way they did for the 3DS. They never did it, and I hoped they would. It'd be way better than Nintendo offering something like Super Chibi Mario , which is a really terrible idea.
In addition, the Wii U GamePad is a perfect canvas for Mario games, and the touch controls on the GamePad are so smooth and intuitive that they make Mario's plumber-like fingers feel like a natural extension of the controller. The game isn't a classic Mario game, but it's a great one.
In this game, Mario can ride on the backs of a giant dinosaur, which became a monstrous thing only because of Luigi's idea to give the dinosaur a mustache. If you're trying to slice through a chained-together lava pit, there's a pole in the middle of the pit that turns into a springy rope that you can use to walk on with a clever jump button.
Of course, the new world and new GamePad controller only add to the game's appeal. The game still offers everything you could possibly want from a Mario game. You can pick up fireballs, hammers, and boomerangs. You can run across single-screen levels, you can collect coins and use them to buy items in a store, you can jump onto a mushroom and ride it to the next part of the level, you can fly using the new propeller hat, you can shoot star coins, you can run in and out of certain doors using the hat, you can ride a bike and fly, you can jump on enemies and use the homing missile, you can use the Wii U's best camera to capture enemy or mushroom photos, you can scan for new items in worlds, and you can use a green Yoshi to swallow enemies and spit them out as a wild ride. 827ec27edc
