Yes, because everyone's got a high profile Shakespeare biography to hand that they are completely enchanted by, and if you want to set your book in modern times and not just the royal court, you have to pick one of their plays.
She clearly is not familiar with it because she doesn’t know the names of everyone in the scene, or even most of them. That’s the one thing you have to have in order to keep track of a version of the action that occurs in a 15th century court. Because if you are playing around with the names of people, you are missing the point of a court, where the courtiers try to help the monarch out as best they can, rather than a scene where a group of people who just happen to be in a room together sit around thinking about the problems in their lives except for this one person. The rest of us are pros at that game. Don’t try to play it.
She knows they are all called characters, but what their names are, she doesn’t know at all. So there is nothing to tell her that they are the ones who have Come Together with that festive banner. So she spends the whole book focused on the ones who are holed up in the bailiff’s house hating each other for petty reasons, who are just mourning the death of someone they never met, and are best friends with someone who doesn’t even exist, and not focusing on anyone who adds anything to What Is Happening With The Subject At Hand.
And she spends very little time focussing on the Queen, who it turns out is the only person in the room who actually has REAL problems with people, and is the only person who has any real power to do anything at all. Though of course Samantha is so busy reading in the room with the other characters who are not particularly true to life at all, she never notices what is going on. d2c66b5586
