The reversible plies method consists of cutting the plywood into the pattern of the gear teeth, and attaching and then detaching a ply to make the appropriate edges. This is generally do-able with any wood that is for planing, but is most effective with soft, white woods. This method is very reliable for free-form gears that require reverse gears (clockwise and counterclockwise), but not so good for properly formed gears or those that require nothing more than simple bevel gear teeth. The reversible plies method takes a slight amount of time and patience, and if done with any method that is not absolutely reliable, it may be worth it.
The segments are hand-cut to help form the segments in the engines as well as the templates. However, the actual cutting process isn’t totally precise. These segments require a bit of trial and error to get the correct configuration, and a certain person to cut them. Once the segments are cut and smoothed, the edges should smooth where they make contact. The segments that are outsourced are cut and smoothed for the most part, but miss-cuts do occur, as do unnoticed edges of glue between layers. These segments are still a fraction of the cost of buying something similar, and you will likely have a nicer stack of segments if you are looking to make segments. d2c66b5586
