If you are attaching an HMC to a new server or adding function toan existing server that requires a firmware update, the HMC machinecode may need to be updated because HMC code must always be equal toor higher than the managed server's firmware. Access to firmware andmachine code updates is conditioned on entitlement and licensevalidation in accordance with IBM policy and practice. IBM may verifyentitlement through customer number, serial number, electronicrestrictions, or any other means or methods employed by IBM at itsdiscretion.

If a single HMC is attached to multiple servers, the HMC machinecode level must be updated to be at or higher than the server with themost recent firmware level. All prior levels of server firmware aresupported with the latest HMC machine code level.

#0347 is a specify code that indicates to IBM configuration toolsand to IBM Manufacturing that RAID-5 or RAID-6 disk arrays should befurther protected using the IBM i function of RAID hot spare. Ifspecified, IBM will ship a configuration which has at least one stand-by disk drive for each disk controller in the system or designatedpartition. The customer may alter the hot spare configurationselecting different options once the system is installed.

Features #1962 and #1964 are physically identical drives with thesame 19B3 CCIN. Different feature codes help the IBM configurationtools understand how the HDD is used. #1964 indicates usage by AIX,Linux or VIOS. #1962 indicates usage by IBM i.

This is a PCIe Gen1 short x8 form factor adapter. It supports theattachment of SAS tape and DVD using a pair of mini SAS 4x connectors.The PCIe1 can be used for external tape drives which are not supportedon the newer and faster 4-port 6Gb PCIe3 adapter (see feature code#EJ10/EJ11/EL60). Making a comparison between SSDs and ordinary (spinning) HDDs is difficult. Traditional HDD benchmarks tend to focus on the performance characteristics that are poor with HDDs, such as rotational latency and seek time. As SSDs do not need to spin or seek to locate data, they may prove vastly superior to HDDs in such tests. However, SSDs have challenges with mixed reads and writes, and their performance may degrade over time. SSD testing must start from the (in use) full drive, as the new and empty (fresh, out-of-the-box) drive may have much better write performance than it would show after only weeks of use.[147]

SSD technology has been developing rapidly. Most of the performance measurements used on disk drives with rotating media are also used on SSDs. Performance of flash-based SSDs is difficult to benchmark because of the wide range of possible conditions. In a test performed in 2010 by Xssist, using IOmeter, 4 kB random 70% read/30% write, queue depth 4, the IOPS delivered by the Intel X25-E 64 GB G1 started around 10,000 IOPs, and dropped sharply after 8 minutes to 4,000 IOPS, and continued to decrease gradually for the next 42 minutes. IOPS vary between 3,000 and 4,000 from around 50 minutes onwards for the rest of the 8+ hour test run.[292]

Sampling is intended to provide certification that a group of new homes meets a particular threshold such as ENERGY STAR®, energy code compliance, or qualification for an energy efficiency lending program. It is based on pre-analysis of building plans meeting the intended qualification (e.g., a HERS Index threshold), and subsequent random testing and inspections of a sample set of the as-built homes. Certifying a group of homes by sampling entitles the customer to documentation certifying that the homes meet the desired threshold; it does not constitute a confirmed HERS rating on any home.
